The hollow paddle dryer for coal slime is a highly efficient indirect conduction drying device specifically designed for processing high-moisture, high-viscosity, and high-ash coal slime in coal washing plants.
With increasingly stringent environmental protection requirements and the availability of surplus steam resources near power plants/coal mines, the hollow paddle dryer has become one of the core solutions to replace traditional direct hot air drum dryers.
Core Working Principle
The main body of the equipment is a W-shaped horizontal shell with a jacket. Inside, two or four hollow main shafts are arranged in parallel and mesh with each other. Wedge-shaped hollow paddles are densely arranged on the shafts.
Dual Heating and Heat Transfer
Saturated steam (or heat transfer oil) is simultaneously introduced into the shell jacket, the hollow main shafts, and the interior of the paddles. After entering the equipment, the material is directly heated by contact with the hot outer wall of the paddles and the inner wall of the tank, evaporating moisture through conduction.
Cross-Shearing and Self-Cleaning Effect
Two wedge-shaped blades on two shafts rotate in opposite directions. During rotation, the inclined surfaces of the blades exert a squeezing, shearing, and tumbling effect on the wet coal slurry. The meshing blades automatically scrape off the wet coal slurry adhering to each other's surfaces, effectively preventing the coal slurry from clumping, adhering, and coking on the heat transfer surface.
Advantages of Hollow Paddle Dryers for Coal Slime Processing
Compared to traditional direct-air drum dryers, hollow paddle dryers offer four core advantages in coal slime drying:
  • Solves high adhesion and wall adhesion problems: When moisture content drops to 20%-30%, coal slime becomes extremely viscous. The wedge-shaped self-cleaning structure continuously cuts and breaks up lumps, forcibly renewing the heat transfer surface and ensuring continuous efficient heat transfer.
  • Minimal exhaust gas volume and low environmental impact: Traditional drum dryers require large volumes of hot air, resulting in huge exhaust gas volumes carrying coal dust. Paddle dryers use pure indirect conduction heating, with exhaust gas being mainly evaporated water vapor containing minimal dust - only 5% to 10% of drum machine air volume.
  • High thermal efficiency and low operating cost: Heat transfers directly through metal walls with minimal heat loss, achieving 80%-90% thermal efficiency. Utilizing low-pressure waste steam (0.3-0.8 MPa) significantly reduces operating costs.
  • Intrinsically safe dust explosion prevention: Low gas velocity, slight negative pressure or water vapor saturation, and low oxygen concentration completely avoid dust explosion risks from fine coal powder under high temperature and wind speed.

Due to the presence of quartz sand, pyrite, and gangue particles in coal slurry, standard paddle dryers require customized modifications for optimal performance:
Wear Resistance Enhancement
The impeller head and wear-prone sides must be overlaid with wear-resistant alloys (tungsten carbide/high-chromium alloy) or thickened with wear-resistant steel plates (NM400/NM500). This prevents hollow impellers from wearing through and leaking steam during prolonged operation.
High-Torque Reduction Transmission
Coal slurry's high shear resistance requires larger drive motors and reducers. The main shaft should be made of high-strength alloy steel to withstand sudden impact loads from high-viscosity regions.
